The Forward House
With the holiday season upon us, before your planner fills up, you may want to pencil in a spot to experience the Bankers Hill/Balboa Park area celebration with brightly lit homes and business’s celebrating this festive time of year. 4 of the ‘Must See’ locations include the Prado in Balboa Park (6th & Laurel), Bertrand at Mr. A’s (5th & Laurel), Scripps Britt Inn (5th & Nutmeg) and The Forward House (1st & Ivy).
The Forward House(pictured) got its ‘moniker’ after John Forward Sr., Mayor of San Diego , had this house designed and built for him in 1905. In 1998, John Olbrich found, bought and restored the dilapated mansion and began to decorate for the season.
Every year since, it comes alive with an extensive lighting display with holiday music. ( Just think Griswald’s house from the movie – ‘Christmas Vacation’ with Chevy Chase). Lights are on between 5 – 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night thru New Year’s Eve.
